Desert to Delta

ITINERARY (Check Expedition Dates)
Day 1 Arrival at Windhoek airport, collect 4WD vehicles and drive into the city - a 40km drive on the wrong side of the road! Tonight we check gear and familiarize ourselves with our
vehicle. Accommodation is in a motel with dinner at a restaurant.
Day 2 We depart at 9:00 am for Sesriem, a nice peaceful and easy drive on a mostly dirt road to the desert dunes down south. At noon we arrive at one of the many open camp areas where we
will spend the night. We will BBQ and show you the ropes in preparation for your turn on the cooking team. Those who wish may climb down the
Canyon to the pools below. Tonight is an early night as we have an early start tomorrow. Distance traveled is 306 km (half asphalt, half
dirt).
Day 3 You will be woken at 3:00 am with some coffee and rusks (a type of biscuit) before we pack up and start our 60km drive into the Naukluft Park to the Sossosvlei dunes.
After this exciting off road session we arrive and start our ascent up some of the highest sand dunes in the world to watch a spectacular
sunrise. We then head on down the dunes and have breakfast before driving on to Walvis Bay (a distance of 320km). Once we reach the coast we will turn south towards a bird nesting area,
an excellent photographic opportunity. We then head on back to town and drive 35km north of Walvis Bay to Swakopmund where we will camp for the night. Dinner will be at the Tugboat Restaurant on the
beach.
Day 4 Today we take it easy, stock up on all the essentials and have a good hot shower, as we will be leaving civilization for a few days. We will do a 'Pub Crawl' around all the old
German pubs in town tonight.
Day 5 We will have a 6:00am start and after coffee and packing up head on north towards Henties Bay. We arrive around 8:00 am and have a good hearty breakfast at the hotel on the ocean
front. We then head on into the rocky desert of the Skeleton Coast and have lunch at Cape Cross, a seal colony. We will pass a few old shipwrecks on our drive up the Skeleton Coast to Torrabaai
before we turn east towards Damaraland. This is the real thing, images of Mars. Tonight we will be camping at an oasis called Palmwag after travelling 450km on a dusty road. The cooking team
will BBQ fresh Snoek purchased in Henties. Later we will spend some time in the pools to cool off and get rid of the desert dust.
Day 6 Today we drive to the rock paintings at Twyfelfontein in the Kaokoland Mountains and spend some time hiking. Once we arrive at Etosha we will take a slow drive to a watering hole and
watch some of the game up close before we move to the Okaukuejo campsite. We enjoy a BBQ listening to the sounds of the night and the animals at the watering hole next to the camp. Tonight we spend
some time watching the animals under big spray lights as they come to drink. We are so close to the animals that we can smell them.
Day 7 Today you are on your own. Get up and pack at your leisure. Explore the park on your own, just be sure to meet the convoy at the next camp - Namutoni. Tonight we will
again spend some time at the watering holes or take a swim in the camp swimming pool.
Day 8 We leave at 8:00 am for a long 640 km trip north on asphalt and dirt roads to Rundu. After lunch at a lodge on the Okavango river we drive further east towards Popafalls were we camp on
the banks of the Okavango River. This is in the wild and the hippo's are just below us. A good rest will be welcome.
Day 9 Today we drive south entering the Mahango National park. This Elephant reserve is filled with some of the biggest Elephants in Africa.
After crossing the border into Botswana we drive south towards Maun where we camp next to the river at a lodge. We stock up on supplies again before we enter the Okavango Delta for a few
days.
Day 10 We depart early and enter the Delta, from now on we will be driving slowly and watching for game. This is one big game drive so have your camera ready. Tonight we camp in the wilderness
after a BBQ. Stories of big animals and narrow escapes are told around the campfire. You will have to try and fall asleep with the sounds of hyena laughing after a kill.
Day 11 Today we drive in a northerly direction towards Chobe. The day is once again a slow game drive. We will spend the night under the stars in Savuti listening to the roar of
Lion.
Day 12 We move on out and have lunch at Chobe Lodge on the banks of the Chobe River before crossing over into Zimbabwe. Once we arrive in Victoria Falls we set up camp and confirm bookings for
the optional rafting that awaits us the next day. We stroll down to the falls, have a sundowner on a booze cruise on the mighty Zambezi river followed by dinner at a steak house.
Day 13 We rise and shine and after a quick breakfast those of us rafting head on into town to the departure point for the rafting trip. After safety procedures are explained by our guides we all board
the rafting truck for a short drive to the canyon. We will descend 110m down the canyon to the river below to start the most horrific and most exciting experience of your life - also the
greatest memory for years to come - grade 5 rapids, the best in the world. Lunch will be on the banks of the Zambezi river and then more rafting. Tonight we relive our rafting trip on a big
screen at the Victoria Falls Hotel. Dinner will be at the hotel restaurant. This will be our last evening together to share stories and memories of a great time had by all.
Day 14 Depart for the Airport - a drive past some of the best curios in Africa.
