Desert Sky
Morrocan Expedition

This expedition will take you from the sea shores of the Atlantic through the most amazing deserts and up to 10 000ft into the snow line on the Atlas Mountains.

ITINERARY (Check Expedition Dates)

Day 1. (September 17, 2003) (Hotel, B, D) We collect the vehicles at the Casablanca Airport and drive to Fes on good established roads. On arrival in Fes we will be overnighting in a modest Hotel.

Day 2. (Hotel, B, D) We will do some sightseeing in Fes, the 4th oldest city of Morocco. That evening we will eat a traditional meal together in a typical Moroccan restaurant. Enjoy the beauty of the Orient with all its fantasy during the meal. Again accomodation is modest in a Hotel.

Day 3. (Camp, B, D) We will be leaving Fes and head inland, to cross the amazing middle Atlas Mountains. Here we will no longer have paved roads to drive on, we will be travelling over unpaved mountain roads.

Day 4. (Camp, B, D) At Pisten we will be crossing the middle Atlas, and at Midelt we will once again hit a main road, that will lead us further to the South.

Day 5. (Camp, B, D) We will be arriving at Erg Chebbi, one of the largest Dune areas of Morocco. We will be spending the night at a camp site right at the dunes. Amazing sunsets and the views from above equally impress.

Day 6. (Camp, B, D) We will cross through the Erg Chebbi, be warned that we will be driving through a lot of sand. The pictures will testify to the difficulty of the roads, what roads? Once again we will camp in the desert under the stars.

Day 7. (Hotel, B, D) Zagora is the largest Oasis in Morroco. In this artistically watered city live approximately 5,000 people. Tonight we will stop in Zagora for a feast.

Day 8. (Camp, B, D) In the morning we will start from Zagora and will drive over Mhamid to Chigaga. Chigaga is the largest dune area of Marocco with dunes up to 300m (980ft) high. We will be overnighting in the middle of the Dunes. Once again a wild desert experience.

Day 9. (Camp, B, D) We will be heading in the direction of the Atlantic ocean. At Foum Zguid we will encounter our first real roads in days. We will be overnighting close to the city Akka.

Day 10. (Camp, B,D) Today we will reach the Atlantic ocean and start driving North once we get to Plage Blanche. Plage Blanche got its name from the translation of the place where the desert touches the Atlantic, it means, the last dunes fall directly into the water. The beach is only drivable during low tide. We will be driving directly along the water edge for approximately 40 kilometers. With some luck we will encounter many Flamingos.

Day 11. (Camp,B,D) Today we will be visiting the famous Three Portals of Lexira, where the water has made huge caves in the red cliffs. We will be spending the night here. Amazing sights in an amazimg area.

Day 12. (Hotel, B, D) This will be a long day in which we will be covering many kilometres. We will drive over Agadir to Marrakech. We will reach Marrakech late in the evening. Marrakech is the most Oriental of the 4 kings cities. Here you will experience the Oriental hautnah (not sure what that is, are you going to a movie, or eating something?). You will visit Jemaa el Fna with us, the place where they used to hang people. Thousands of sorcerors, musicians, singers and fabel tellers used to create their colourful plays here at night. A visit to Souk, a typical traditional, Moroccan market place, will round off the evening. We will spend the night in a Hotel.

Day 13. (Hotel, B,D)We will do some sightseeing in Marrakech. A local Guide will accompany us, who will take us to the Buildingworks and may just slip us one or two small secrets. Tonight you will have an evening to yourself to explore and taste the rich culture.

Day 14. (30 September) We will head out from Marrakech to Casablanca Airport in the morning, where you will return your vehicles and start the trip back home.
